When country bands slowly faded into the background in the 60s and 70s, Alabama broke boundaries and uplifted the country band scene. They formed in the late 1970s with origins from both country and rock. They might have significant influences from rock and pop; there is no doubt that Alabama is a country band. They have harmonies, lyrics, and attitudes that are distinctly country. However, their genre-bending music style earned them the distinction as the most well-known country band in history.
Randy Owen, Jeff Cook, and Teddy Gentry, cousins who were raised closely, formed Alabama. They became professional in 1972 and changed their name from Wildcountry to their home state. In 1977, they tasted success with "I Wanna Be with You Tonight." This was followed by the single "My Home's in Alabama," which caught the attention of recording studios. They were soon signed with RCA Records and released their first mainstream success, "Tennessee River." After this hit, their journey to becoming a treasured and acclaimed band began. They have released over 25 albums, and 40 number-one hit songs, amassed many listeners from many generations, and received many accolades. Currently, the band consists of Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry.
Alabama is returning for their "Roll On North America" tour this year. One of their stops will be at the iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre on Saturday, April 29. Joining in on the fun is Lonestar, the 90s and 2000s favorite country music group due to their songs like "Amazed" and "My Front Porch Looking In." See them live!
